Irvine, Orange County
The Great Park is taking shape on the runways of the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, which closed in 1999. Its big orange balloon lifts riders on a tether for a view across Irvine, and a carousel, sports fields and farm plots fill the ground below. The park has opened in phases as more of the old base is converted.
